Does Size Matter?

I'm currently working on a scarf that is 36" plus some trim in length and only 18 stitches wide.

That's a damn short scarf. Since it goes around the neck, it will only hang about 18" long. Tie a simple knot, and it gets even shorter. Still, I know for a fact that the designer would be physically overwhelmed by a scarf any wider or longer.

I, on the other hand, do not have that problem. I'm perfectly happy to wrap a scarf around my neck three times and still have it hang to my knees.

So here's the dilemma. I do not plan on keeping this scarf. I plan on giving it as a gift to someone who doesn't have my exquisite taste a friend. Do I make it as written or as I would wear it?

I'd make it longer than 36 inches. That just doesn't seem very long for an 18" wide scarf. I wouldn't make it too much longer, though. Just my thought on it. :)

I think that 36 inches, no matter who you are is just a wee bit short. Add another 6-10 inches to it and it should be a great scarf. Just my .02.

36 inches really is too short for an 18 inch wide scarf, but I like short scarves if they're narrower. They fold nicely around your neck & don't provide extra bulk underneath the coat. I wear them whenever I don't want a scarf on the outside for some reason.

I'd make it longer. Much much longer. For an 18 stitch wide scarf, 36" is way too short (in my opinion, at least). I'd go at least long enough to toss over the shoulder once, maybe long enough to wrap completely around the neck once.

My rule of thumb is to make a scarf as long as the wearer is tall if the scarf is for warmth. 36" seems too short.
