The Mystery Deepens

Continuing on in the Aldridge & Co. catalogue, we also find the following types of hosiery:
  • Women's Black Llama
  • Women's Black Silk Warp

There it is again, evidence of a non-wool animal fiber in use prior to the Civil War. And a big part of me truly believes that these are knitted hose. Then the word "warp" throws me off again. "Warp" as in "weft and warp"? As in woven? As in fabric, not knitting?

I'm flummoxed.

But in good news, the same page lists the following:

  • Men's Bro. Cotton 1/2 Hose, Fancy col'd Merino feet.
  • Men's Bro. Cotton 1/2 Hose, Grey col'd Merino feet.

I'd love to see some of those brown cotton socks with fancy colored wool feet.

Just don't knit any self-striping Civil War socks and say that I said you could.

I'm no expert, but I always thought warp thread was just a generic term for any highly twisted strong thread suitable for warping a loom. I imagine it could find other uses as well, especially in hosiery, which requires a strong fine thread?

My guess is it's a typo - it was supposed to be "wrap." (I love proofreading...)
