Indiana Yarn?

Also in the Aldridge & Co. catalogue are the following types of hosiery (pg 6):
  • Women's Black Cashmere, plain and ribbed.
  • Women's Black Alpaca.
  • Women's Black Indiana.

So again, we have firm evidence that it was possible to buy stockings knitted of both alpaca and cashmere. It never made sense to me that one could buy the fabric but not the yarn. Again, I'm not yet ready to say "Go knit some alpaca stockings for your next reenactment," but I'm glad to see some evidence that someone somewhere was knitting with such fibers.

That said, what in the hell kind of fiber is Indiana?

The OED is no help. Go ahead, google "indiana yarn" and just see what happens.

I thought about that--and have some other questions as well. I'm not quite ready to let them know I'm talking about them behind their backs :P
