For a number of reasons, death has been on my mind over the past few weeks, so this photo jumped out at me.

The larger view is even more grisly.
The Wilderness Campaign had taken place the previous summer, and in the following spring, April 1865, this group of African-American men were detailed to the site of the Battle of Cold Harbor to recover bodies. I suspect they're US Colored Troops (USCT) by the clothing of the other soldiers in the background.
