Free Bulky Knit Hat Pattern

If that title doesn't bring them in, I don't know what will. My latest site hits are a lot of "mcy yarns" (which is unbelievably redundant--like "UPC code"), and the ubiquitous "civil war sontag." And for some reason I can't figure out, I keep getting hits in various Romance languages for images of nougat.

HELGA

This pattern was inspired by Hannah,** but knitted in a truly bulky yarn. It's designed for the ponytail wearer who has despaired of wearing a hat in winter.

Size: Adult

Materials:
  • 3 skeins of Knitting Fever Jumbo Merino
  • 1 pair size 13 straight needles
  • 1 set size 13 DPs
  • stitch marker (to mark beginning of round)
  • tapestry needle (to weave in ends)
  • 1 large (as in big honkin') button

Gauge: 2.5 stitches per inch in stockinette on straight needles, size 13

Directions:

With straight needles, cast on 60 stitches. Knit one row.

Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 3 rows.

Buttonhole row: K2, YO, P2tog, (K2, P2 to end)

Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 3 more rows.

Cast off 6 stitches and beginning of next row and K across.

Work in stockinette until hat measures 5.5" from cast on.

Begin decreases: *K7, k2tog* across the row. K next row.

*K6, K2tog* across the row. K next row.

*K5, K2tog* across the row.

*K4, K2tog* across the row.

Working your yarn onto DPs, joining the yarn into a circle, and placing a marker to mark the beginning of the round, *K3, K2tog* around the row.

*K2, K2tog* around the row.

*K1, K2tog* around the row.

*K2tog* around the row.

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" tail. Weave yarn through remaining 6 stitches and tighten to close top of hat. Weave in ends.

Attach button.

Cool hat pattern. Wish I could wear my hair long enough for a ponytail. Kinky curly hair just wads, it does not ponytail.

I'm confused? I must be missing something. After knitting on straight needles for 5'5" it says to decrease knitting the rest of the rows until you change to DP's. So are you knitting in garter for those decrease rows?
Thanks for this cute pattern

You're actually working in stockinette, so when you work flat, you knit one side and purl the other. When you join in the round, knit every row.
